Hardwired vs plug-in (NEMA 14-50)

A 14-50 outlet install is slightly cheaper and lets you unplug and take the charger when you move — but code now requires a GFCI breaker on that receptacle (adding ~$100–$150), and outlets are the weak point under continuous 40A loads; cheap receptacles have melted. Hardwiring costs similar-to-slightly-more, permits higher continuous amperage (48A on a 60A circuit), and removes the failure point. For a permanent home setup, hardwired is the quality answer; for renters and movers, the outlet has its case.

Do you even need 48 amps?

Charging speed math most buyers skip: a 40A charger adds roughly 25–30 miles of range per hour; even 24A adds ~18. Overnight, almost any Level 2 rate fills any battery from any realistic daily driving. If your panel is tight, installing at 24–32A on a smaller breaker — or using a load-management device — often delivers everything you'll actually feel while avoiding a $3,000+ panel upgrade. Right-size to your driving, not the spec sheet.

Incentives in 2026

The federal 30C credit for home charging equipment ended for property placed in service after June 30, 2026 under current law — so most new installs no longer qualify.
